Keeping a business up and running is not for the faint of heart. Statistically speaking, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports that approximately 80% of the businesses operating with less than five hundred employees make it through the first year. Around 70% of these companies are still operating by the end of the next year. Moreover, by the time they hit the five-year mark, only half of those surviving companies are stable enough to carry on with their businesses.

Fortunately, there’s a good chance that you can rank among the long-standing companies when you’re adequately prepared to overcome the financial difficulties in business at all times. However, before we move on to discuss how you can do it, it’s essential to review some of the basic problems that lead organizations to deal with financial issues in the first place.

6 Factors That Lead Businesses to Encounter Financial Challenges

  1. Inconsistent Cash Flow – Most companies don’t have the proper know-how to manage their cash flow adequately. These shortcomings include balancing accounts receivable and accounts payable to maximize the cash-to-cash conversion cycle.
  2. Insufficient Capital – Insufficient capital is mostly due to a lack of a secure budget plan. However, no matter the cause, this factor alone compels more than half of the businesses to shut down before they get to start operating properly.
  3. Debt Accumulation – With inconsistent cash flow and insufficient capital, there’s very little chance a company can avoid going into major debts that might greatly impact the organization in the long run. Often times when in order to cover overhead such as payroll and rent, business owners will take on a lot of debt in the form of credit cards or small business loans.
  4. Debt Accumulation – Not to mention, you can’t make money without a steady, if not a growing, customer base. Lack of effort in boosting your marketing tactics is a big cause of a lack of a customer base. Many times, not enough market research has gone into determining where your proper customer base is.
  5. Debt Accumulation – Not to mention, you can’t make money without a steady, if not a growing, customer base. Lack of effort in boosting your marketing tactics is a big cause of a lack of a customer base. Many times, not enough market research has gone into determining where your proper customer base is.
  6. Unforeseen Expenses – Lastly, understating or completely neglecting the unforeseen expenses when creating a company budget is one of the leading reasons businesses run off-track and shut down. While payroll and facility expenses seem pretty straightforward, unexpected repairs to equipment, professional services such as attorneys and accountants can throw your budget off track.

8 Steps for Overcoming the Financial Difficulties in Business

  1. Identify the Underlying Problems – To overcome the financial difficulties that come with running a business, you must identify your problem areas first. The six points we discussed previously will help you establish precisely what needs to be targeted to get back in control and on track.
  2. Restructure Your Business and Budget Plans – Once you detect the weakest link leading to reduced profits, you can begin restructuring your business plan accordingly. This task is usually delegated to the senior project managers who can eliminate the business vulnerability by focusing on the company’s strengths. The business plan needs to be structured department-wise so that each team can focus on improving the targeted area using their particular expertise while utilizing the dedicated budget proficiently.
  3. Check Inflows and Construct Business Expenses Effectively – There’s no funding, capitalization, or insurance without consistent incoming cash flow. That’s why it is necessary to check your inflows and establish whether you’ve been accumulating unnoticed debts or stocking your inventory unnecessarily. Once you’re monitoring your inflows diligently, you can construct your expenses without creating havoc. Furthermore, you should never be scrambling for funds at the end of every other month. Instead, all your dues and payments should be scheduled and planned, which gives you the time to negotiate better deals with suppliers or find new ones. Moreover, it’s crucial to factor in the unforeseen expenses when creating your company budgets, so nothing gets you off-track.
  4. Sell Unnecessary Assets – If your business’s financial situation worsens with time, you must consider selling your unnecessary assets to gain back some of the lost control. You might be surprised how many immediate expenses can be covered using the money you get by selling assets your company has stopped using, to begin with.
  5. Boost Your Marketing Tactics – The main initiative of any business is to make hefty profits, and you can’t do that without a rising customer base. If you want to encourage your potential clients to buy your products or patronize your services, you have to come up with revenue-boosting marketing strategies. While this step might require you to spend money for advertising your business, the sales you’ll get due to this will be more than compensating.
  6. Look for Investors – Finding professional investors who are willing to finance your business helps you in more than one way. You get steady money to overcome the financial difficulties in business, in addition to upscaling your services, investing in good marketing tactics, and even using the investor’s experienced advice to turn your business around.
  7. Pay Off the Biggest Debt First – Many businesses make the mistake of paying off their small debts while waiting for a miracle breakthrough to cover the major dues. In reality, you should concentrate on clearing your biggest duets first, considering that the rising interest rates you have to give back on them can effectively put you out of business when left unattended for a long time.
  8. Report Everything – Lastly, it’s crucial to report all your finances regularly, so you don’t have to deal with a sudden expense without warning. Plus, it’s essential to remember that even reporting your revenues incorrectly on the tax forms can put your business in jeopardy at times since improper deductions can result in huge interest charges, fines, and jail time. Not to mention, when all your accounts payable and accounts receivable are listed in one place, you can construct your business plan much more effectively, keeping the report as your reference point.

The Final Verdict

While financial difficulties in businesses are a reality you can’t avoid, you can always make effective plans to position your company for success without incurring major losses in the process. As long as you manage to tackle the issues that keep lowering your sales and restructure your budget plan accordingly, your business will continue to grow slowly but surely.

This one-time experiment turned cult classic had a hand in shifting gaming as we know it. Originally known for the massive online multiplayer PC phenomenon, Counter-Strike and of course the all-time classic Half-Life, expectations were fairly high. But a game like this was still uncharted territory, so it was released as part of The Orange Box, which included Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress.

The Premise Of Portal

The game begins in an abandoned research facility, seemingly controlled by an AI-powered robot. GLaDOS introduces itself and starts giving you a series of tests to monitor your physical and on-the-spot problem-solving abilities. Naturally playing as Chell, your objective is to get out by any means necessary.

So… you’re basically a guinea pig working to navigate the dangerous laser-ridden obstacles for the amusement of a lonely robot. Wouldn’t sound like an ideal vacation destination, but it makes for an excellent gaming experience – especially if you enjoy science fiction and puzzles.

What kind of puzzles?

Well, you’re handed a portal gun that can be used to navigate these courses – many of which are impossible without it. Eventually, your portal gun is upgraded, allowing the player to create two portals that connect to each other – this makes for so many more possibilities, which, in turn, calls for more difficult puzzles to solve.

Cultural Impact

Throughout the game, GLaDOS makes promises of cake if you can complete the series of tests in its entirety. This is seen as some sort of incentive, similar to how scientists use cheese for experiments with rats.

As you may have guessed, there was no cake. This led to the popular internet meme “The Cake is a Lie“, which people would often use when someone offers a reward for something that they have no intention of following through with.

The eeriness of the robot promising cake still sticks with us… it’s as if that’s one of the few things the robot knows about humans, so it thinks it’s doing an amazing job motivating you. When in reality, you’re a person fearing for your life… something a psychopathic robot would never be able to feel or understand in the first place. GLaDOS also makes grim (sometimes humorous) remarks throughout the game that acts as comic relief and a device to convey the player’s anxiety.

The Sequel

With Portal being a smash hit, Valve eventually blessed us with a sequel. In this story, you aren’t a human trapped in the facility, but another robot trying to escape. You’re guided by Wheatley, another robot who can fly around the facility – he always has the best intentions, but always seems to misunderstand the situation or just flat out drop the ball. The biggest case being when he awakens GLaDOS.

Once awakened, you’re given even more dangerous tasks to satisfy her boredom, fully equipped with passive-aggressive (and sometimes hilarious) comments to keep you company. Wheatley comes in and out in an attempt to help, but let’s face it – he’s mainly comic relief… or is he?

Will There Be A Third?

Sadly, no. At least, probably not. We’ve yet to see a true 3rd installment of any Valve game to date, including their most popular titles like Team Fortress, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead and so on. This doesn’t mean it’s impossible, but we certainly aren’t getting our hopes up.

The Good News?

Portal and Portal 2 are still loads of fun and even after years of release, they still prove themselves to be replayable. If you just wait enough time in between sessions, part of the game almost feels like you’re playing it for the first time!

The success of any Manufacturing facility hugely depends on its feasibility report. This feasibility work includes the selection of a site for setting up the manufacturing plant after factoring in multiple quantitative and qualitative variables. Businesses leading those projects need to consider various implications while selecting a manufacturing location. They have to extensively study the consequences of selecting one particular manufacturing plant site for the operating expense, product quality, profit margins, logistics, supply chain, and the environment. With such significance, any business and corporation must select a manufacturing location with extreme diligence.

Committing a mistake when choosing a manufacturing site can prove to be very costly for the given business in many aspects. We will discuss six mistakes that every business should avoid while picking a manufacturing location:

  1. Starting Work without Getting Consensus on Search Parameters

Oftentimes, organizations commit a mistake in choosing a manufacturing location right at the beginning of the process without proper specifications laid out. This mistake materializes when site searching teams start their work in the absence of a consensus of what the company is actually looking for in the new site. Any selection work of a manufacturing location involves a set of search parameters that guide the searching team in the right direction for picking the best possible site and without these clearly laid out, site location could be off the mark.

However, it is vital to develop a consensus among all the decision-makers and stakeholders about what should be laid out in terms of the search parameters. From coordinating all parts including HR issues and environment to construction cost concerns, everything must be addressed in that document and has the seal of approval of all the concerned parties. Developing this agreement before starting the search will make sure the site searching team doesn’t end up assessing and shortlisting suboptimal locations. Such an exercise will only result in wasting time, money, and other resources.

  2. Picking Site Based on Offered Incentives Rather than Operational Requirements

Local governments and communities offer incentives to businesses for setting up their manufacturing facilities in their jurisdictions. These incentive packages can serve as a tiebreaker when you can’t decide between two manufacturing sites. However, giving more weight to incentives instead of operational requirements is something that every business should avoid while picking a manufacturing site.

For example, you may choose a manufacturing site based on its low and lenient tax details. However, if that site doesn’t offer you the best in terms of your logistical requirements and labor needs, the tax benefits won’t make this site selection a good investment in the long run.

  3. Choosing a Site for Current Operational Needs
Many times corporations just consider their current operational requirements when choosing a manufacturing site. While it is important to keep your current operational requirements at the top of the list, it is equally necessary to factor in your expansion plans and future roadmaps. Building a manufacturing facility from scratch entails a lot of groundwork and investment. Therefore, make sure that it is not going to become insufficient or redundant in the next five or ten years.

These are a couple of things you can do to make sure a new manufacturing site is not just meant to fulfill your existing operational requirements.

    • Make sure the location you choose will remain business-friendly for a long time.
    • Check the economic forecast of the region and how its industrial and manufacturing landscape is going to perform in the next few decades.
    • Make sure there is enough acreage and technological capacity on the site to accommodate any of your expansion plans.
  4. Ending Up with an Option with no Alternatives

When searching for a manufacturing location, businesses should always go for two sites that fulfill all the parameters set in the beginning. These sites should meet all the requirements set forth in the initial phases and be an optimal choice in the end. Limiting yourself to just one site can leave you stuck in the end if your one and only choice falls through. Also, having more than one location gives you bargaining and negotiating power between the various locations and can help broker the best deal.

  5. Not Fully Understanding Topographical and Geotechnical Issues

Costs, logistics, and incentives are not the only elements to factor in when choosing a manufacturing location. A business must have experts on board that can factor in the geotechnical, topographical, climate, environmental, and archeological factors as well. Factoring in all these things will answer many important questions. For instance, you will find out:

    • How to approach wastewater treatment at that particular location?
    • What are the environmental protocols and compliance measures you will need to follow to set up wastewater treatment of your manufacturing facility?
    • What are the potential locations of freshwater wetlands?
    • Is the site suitable for 12-month operations?
    • Is the site in the floodplain?

Not finding answers to all these and similar questions can weaken your basis for selecting any particular site for your manufacturing facility.

  6. Failing to Maintain Confidentiality

Site searching for a new manufacturing facility is a business secret. You don’t want to let your competitors know about your future/ expansion/ reorganization plans when they are still in the nascent phase. This makes the entire project of searching and selecting a manufacturing location a confidential affair. Nonetheless, very few businesses manage to maintain that confidentiality.

Most businesses fail to maintain that confidentiality because:

  7. They use actual titles and names instead of using codes for the project
  8. They are operating without stricter NDAs (Non-Disclosure Agreements)
  9. No organizational hierarchy is set for information sharing
    Bottom Line

By being mindful of these six mistakes in choosing a manufacturing location, a company can manage to have a successful beginning for its new business plans. On the other hand, if companies commit these mistakes in picking the manufacturing site, they will not just fail in leveraging this decision (i.e. setting up a manufacturing facility). They can also lose millions of dollars in the opportunity cost in the long run. Moreover, if the manufacturing facility is a part of an expansion or relocation plan, the bad site selection will neutralize any potential competitive edge of this move.

The 1990s was a simpler time, wasn’t it?

It acted as a bridge that connected older generations of media with a new era that expressed new waves of creativity and interactiveness, with early introductions of what later became modern technology. At the forefront, we had gaming systems like the Sega Genesis, which paved the way for some of the most popular games over 20 years later. So let’s rewind to 10 of the most loved and admired action-adventure games for the Sega Genesis.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist (1992)

What boy growing up in the 90s didn’t love the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? From the cartoon to video games and the live-action movie, you couldn’t (and didn’t want to) escape turtlemania. But one game seems to stand out. The platform, “beat ‘em up’ adventure game, brought players through the streets, parks and sewers of New York City to fight their way to the Hyperstone and prevent Shredder from world takeover. The overall playstyle was reminiscent of the original TMNT arcade game, but with an ambiance that brought the experience to a whole new level.

Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master (1993)

Shinobi 3 brought a lot of the fun from its original titles, but with a twist. Players now had options for moves, weapons, techniques, even some combo opportunities that gave them a truly unique game. The only drawback? Shinobi 3 was super difficult to beat, just like its other titles. So if you have patience and an appetite for fun, give it a shot!

Earthworm Jim (1994)

Playthrough the animated lower layers of the earth as “Earthworm Jim”. The unique platform design and boss fights made this game innovative and the cartoon-y design made it fun for the whole family. When you talk about family-fun adventure games for the Sega Genesis, there’s a reason why Earthworm Jim comes to mind.

Rocket Knight Adventures (1993)

Everyone loved Rocket Knight Adventures because it was one of the earlier Sega games that were able to compete with the likes of Super Mario, Sonic and Mega Man. Speaking of Mega Man, this was like a unique twist without as many gadgets, allowing users to get a little more ‘up close and personal’ with their enemies.

The Adventures of Batman & Robin (1994)

Da na na na na na na na… BATMAN!!!

Loosely based on the hit animated series, The Adventures of Batman & Robin tales the user through the streets of Gotham City to take on two-face, the riddler and many more notorious villains. It played like a platform game, but offered additional features that gave people hours of entertainment… all with the DC aesthetic that everyone loves about the caped crusader.

Gunstar Heroes (1993)

Imagine a fantasy land mixed with awesome rockets and lasers… that’s Gunstar Heroes. This action-adventure meets RPG kind of set the bar for a lot of games to follow. The huge array of mini villains, boss battles and adventure maps gave people a truly unique adventure. As a matter of fact, it still has something of a cult following even today.

Streets of Rage 2 (1992)

I feel like I can count on one or two hands how many Sega Genesis series are still around today and Streets of Rage is one of them. The perfect mix of beat em’ up mixed with platform-adventure made this game so much fun and in a unique way.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992)

Who can forget one of the best retro gaming sequels ever? This game took off from the original legendary Sonic the Hedgehog, allowing users to play as Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to fight Eggman and his minions. Legend says some players are still stuck in the nuclear power plant…

Castelavia: Bloodlines (1994)

If you like fantasies and horror, then Castlevania is certainly for you. Here you play as Simon and Richter Belmont as you fight through various stages, including Dracula’s castle to end his tyrannous reign. Like many other Castlevania games, Bloodlines was able to stand out with its state-of-the-art graphics, excellent storytelling and advanced gameplay.

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991)

Can you honestly say you’re surprised? Sonic the Hedgehog was the game that put Sega on the map in an act to compete with Nintendo’s Super Mario and it did just that. The unique, ring-filled adventures brought users a new perspective on adventure games as it clashed between science and fantasy. The only real drawback is that it’s very hard to beat. With all his abilities, why can’t Sonic do a little better underwater?!?!?

Despite many influential individuals and world leaders still denying the existence of global warming and the consequent catastrophes, general public perception about environmental pollution has been consistent for the last couple of years. Terms like green, renewable, sustainability, biodegradability, etc. representing eco-friendly products and processes are now part of the greater discussion. While many boomers are still sitting on the fence, millennials and Generation Z have no confusion about what they want from the companies when it comes to saving the environment. For many younger people, “sustainability” must be an essential clause of the corporate social responsibility contract of any organization. Whether it is a new entrepreneur or a seasoned business person, they need to make their manufacturing facilities more eco-friendly for retaining customers and avoiding stricter government policies. Here, I am going to discuss a couple of measures that manufacturing facility owners should introduce to turn their overall operation eco-friendlier.

Powering Your Manufacturing Process with Renewable Energy

For an owner of a manufacturing facility, this requirement may sound like another “easier said than done” advice given by armchair experts. Yes, powering an entire manufacturing process from renewable energy is not an easy task. However, it has become exceedingly easier in the last decade or so. We now have more efficient ways of harnessing and storing renewable energy. Also, there are renewable energies beyond hard-to-harness options. For instance, a manufacturing process running on hydroelectricity is also essentially using renewable energy with minimal greenhouse emissions. It is also vital for manufacturing facilities to turn to renewable energy because statements like “it is impossible to run manufacturing on clean energy” doesn’t stand up anymore after various organizations have set multiple precedents. I would like to share an example of Tesla’s Gigafactory here. This factory spans 10 million square feet and is responsible for making batteries for half a million electric cars annually. Solar and geothermal energy sources are entirely running this huge manufacturing facility. If a manufacturing plant as large as Gigafactory can take care of its operations through renewable energy, small and mid-sized facilities can surely think about bringing about this green transformation.

It’s never too late to start or invest in a small business. What is considered a “small business”? Either having fewer than 500 employees or falling beneath an annual receipt cap pertaining to their given industry. While some industries are easier to get into than others, we decided to compile the 12 ideas we think will be most likely to turn a profit.

Legal Services/Law Firms

No matter what, there will always be a need for lawyers and paralegals across all practices. This is true for individuals and businesses seeking legal assistance, as statistically, they will at some point in their lives. We all know the value of a great lawyer, don’t we?

These are the practices we think are most valuable:

  • Trusts and Estates
  • Elder Law
  • Criminal Law
  • Personal Injury
  • Intellectual Property
  • Business Law
  • Employment Law
  • Intellectual Property Law
  • Constitutional Law
  • Family Law

Real Estate and Leasing

Following the housing crisis of 2008, the real estate market has shown us a new life. We’re seeing a large influx of rentals, with millennials disproportionately owning their homes. A constant and steady income is never a bad idea! With that said, homes are still going at a solid rate and economists expect homeownership in millennials to increase in years to come.

All in all, real estate offers stability within an industry that will never go away.

Digital Marketing Services

With more being done online (both via phones and full computers), business is inevitably following. Between increasing exposure on search engines, digital advertising, social media marketing, web design and development, public relations, and content creation, there is ample opportunity for selling useful and profitable services for businesses of all sizes and industries.

Doctors Offices

Like with law firms… everyone needs ones (only more so). We’re seeing more urgent care centers opening up, making accessibility easier for people. As with most business models, more accessibility leads to more opportunities. With generally high-profit margins, doctors’ offices are always solid options for entrepreneurs.

Cleaning Services

Regardless of the economy, cleaning services are an essential service for both commercial and residential properties. Despite misconceptions, the services aren’t particularly cheap, producing average rates of upwards of $35/hr.

Funeral Homes

People have always and will always die. As morbid as that sounds, it’s the truth, making funeral homes an industry that will boom consistency for as long as mankind exists. This is also part of the American culture… to give the dead a peaceful departure.

The obstacle is getting started… you’ll need a large house with an office, wide-open rooms for wakes and a large basement for prep work. Then the overhead of cremation, which most outsource. With all that considered, the average American funeral costs between $7000-10,000.

Landscaping and Gardening

Landscaping services can be unexpectedly profitable when their clientele is right. Residential homes, businesses, office blocks, golf courses, and so many areas can serve as gold mines for organized landscaping crews.

You’ll need a crew, trucks, and of course, equipment that should cost you around $25,000 to get started. After months of hard work, you can be in the black.

If you’re capable of motivating and managing crews of people, then you should be able to retain clients and generate large profits over time.

Dental Offices

Dentists are important and there’s a reason why there’s been a recent influx of them. Many Americans visit the dentist at least twice per year, so there’s plenty of business not even considering people that need actual work done.

Accounting Services

Having a trustworthy accounting service is imperative for businesses and even more so for those on the larger side. Their services are wide and with an average net profit nearing 20%, the project itself is somewhat of a no brainer. The trick is assembling a high-quality team. This, largely because of the high level of competition.

Personal Training and Fitness Instructors

Fitness is full of fun fads and trends and people will pay top dollar for proper guidance. Take CrossFit for example. The demand for personal trainers and fitness locations will never diminish and the variety of practices (CrossFit, weights, yoga boutiques, etc.) should explain just how valuable this industry is.

Recent word from the White House was grim. For reasons that were not entirely clear, the President planned to leverage international trade by imposing an historic ‘temporary’ tariff increase of 250% (from 10% to 25%) on a wide range of foreign-manufactured goods that enter the U.S. Presidential supporters and critics alike were perplexed. Why the sanctions, why now, and what does this mean for American consumers and businesses? Will it cost more to buy a car? Will there be fewer consumer goods to select from? Will our grocery tab increase? In this article we’ll examine the facts and explore the possible outcomes.

What it is: The United States has proposed a “temporary” tariff of 25% levied on goods manufactured in China, Mexico, and other countries. This action marks a radical policy departure. In fact, every President since the New Deal has backed efforts to minimize or to eliminate trade barriers. This action has effectively promoted economic prosperity as well as has contributed to improved relations between nations.

What brought it about: Economists seem to generally agree that these trade agreements or disagreements are a long shot attempt to strengthen U.S.-based manufacturers. It is viewed as a forced attempt for Americans to buy American. This scheme is actually short-sighted as many manufacturers, such as those in the automotive industry, send raw materials for steel manufacture to Asian countries. Detroit’s automakers then buy the finished, foreign-made auto parts to assemble their vehicles. This process sounds convoluted but in truth is far less expensive than it would cost if those same parts had been made in the U.S.

Look closely at that Subaru you drive. See the little decal in the back side window? Yup. It is assembled in Oklahoma, U.S. A. from parts, some of which have been manufactured abroad to keep the vehicle’s sticker costs down. The only question that remains: Will an Outback that costs 15% more still be attractive to American drivers? Can hardcore Asian-import drivers turn to GM? And just what percentage of the vehicles manufactured in Detroit are actually fully American-made?

What it brought about: Tit for tat on a global scale. No sooner had the levy been announced than opposing nations levied similar tariffs on American-made goods. Gentlemen, it would appear the U.S. has sparked an international trade war.

What it means to U.S. Consumers and Businesses: Basically, for the duration, or until these tariffs are lifted or reduced, everyone is going to have to ante up for roughly 15% more than they would have paid for the same goods prior to these restrictions being imposed. That is because even though the tariffs have been raised to 25% for imported goods, the U.S. had already been charging 10% for goods imported into the country.

Items are going to increase in cost, but not value. It will have multiple effects: fewer new imported cars will be sold, and quality used vehicles will increase in value. And we will all receive an economics lesson when we learn just how many products that Americans cannot do without are manufactured in Asia: Here is a partial list:

  • Electronics- computers, audio systems, cell phones, home security systems, lawn mowers, we already covered automotive, but let’s not forget trucks, especially long distance trucking vehicles.
  • Clothing and apparel, footwear.
  • Household goods such as beds and bedding, furniture, appliances, vacuum cleaners, decor, luggage, tools, and recreational equipment.
  • Food: According to Fortune, 70% of our vegetables, and 40% of our fruits are imported from Mexico. Fresh food will cost consumers more at the checkout counter. A possible solution would be to establish a victory garden and grow one’s own food, or to support local farmers and, just like our ancestors, can, preserve and store food for the non-growing season.

Who is most likely to be impacted? Big box stores that maintain 40K worth of different products. These source most of their inventory from China. Since these stores are known for the relative quality of their products for the price, raising prices might cause their consumer base to turn elsewhere.

Small manufacturing businesses. American manufacturing is also its economic backbone. However, in just about every town there are small businesses that create parts that combined with parts by other manufacturers around the country, are purchased by major manufacturers for use in machinery as well as on production assembly lines. The range is varied and includes: drill presses, gauges and calibration equipment, construction equipment such as backhoes, and excavators, equipment used in materials manufacture such as extruders, and polishers, etc. These need to be manufactured and maintained and for that one needs new and used parts.

Consumers: As for consumers, economists dismiss that China will be paying for the imposed tariffs. Instead, they claim that U.S. taxpayers will foot the bill by paying higher prices for the products and services they need. Buying will become more needs-based, with far less impulse buying that accounts for a percentage of overall consumer sales. There is already a trend towards buying used clothing and accessories. Not only does it bring that designer handbag within reach, but the movement is a step towards decluttering landfills, said to be almost entirely composed of used textiles. Consumers will consider leasing their vehicles. Some who are committed to car ownership will hold on to their cars longer, and learn to bypass the dealership for OEM replacement components turning instead to secondary markets and quality used automotive parts when their vehicles need repairs.

What are the Benefits? Long term, will the tariffs increase sales for American-made goods and services? Possibly, but only if the quality can justify the spend. Also, as implied previously, due to trade agreements, many U.S. manufacturers collaborate with foreign firms to create products that are sold in the U.S. if not wholly manufactured Stateside. Will the tariffs create more jobs in the U.S.? That remains to be seen, but is a possibility, however remote at this time.

If we are to believe what historians tell us, George Washington never told a lie, Davy Crockett shot a bear when he was a toddler, and Lincoln was always completely ‘honest’. Okay, we all know alliteration when we see it, but if this author is imbibing the Kool Aid correctly, life in simpler times meant that our drinking water was pure, our skies unpolluted by smoke from industrial plants, and our farm-raised food absolutely wholesome. Let’s remember that scientific, medical, industrial, and technological advances made during the nineteenth century have greatly benefited our lives. Now the pendulum appears to be swinging in the other way as our longevity seems to be negatively impacted by changes these breakthroughs have had on our environment and our health. In this article we’ll explore the growing awareness that to live better we must preserve our environment and, whenever possible, to ‘think green’.

Back in the 1950s, Rachel Carson, a scientist, warned us about pollution risks to our health and to the environment in her landmark book: ‘Silent Spring’. Her work set off worldwide awareness of industrial plant waste violations, and the trickle down effect that toxic chemicals have to living organisms throughout the food chain and even our life cycles. As a result, many environmental agencies, both government-controlled and in the private sector emerged. These groups serve as both watchdogs and legislators to ensure that industries are run as green (non-polluting) as possible, and that any transgressions are swiftly identified and remediated.

Most of us have little time in our lives to become activists, however, at the same time there are many ways we can live greener lives and help ourselves and our environment. Here’s a brief list:

  1. Buy second-hand clothing. You might think that paper or plastics comprise the bulk of our landfills. Nope. It is fabric. One way to reduce fiber waste is by purchasing our clothing, or partially wardrobing from brick and mortar or online thrift shops. Not only will you save money, but many of these items are unworn and with their original tags. This is also an ideal way to own a coveted luxury item such as a designer handbag without buyer’s remorse when you receive your credit card statement.
  2. Speaking of paper, try to eliminate catalogs and 2nd class adverts in your mailbox by unsubscribing online. At work, troll your office printers where forgotten or outdated printouts are abandoned. Tear these into scraps and use as note paper. Save on toner by squeezing every print possible from each cartridge. When printouts are faded, remove and shake the toner cartridge then replace it in its holster. You’ll reap an additional 15% more prints using this method.
  3. Many states are mandating that grocers charge for plastic bags. Accordingly, multi-use bags made from recycled materials have become a popular choice as we now bring our own bags from home. If you must purchase plastic bags, reuse them the next time you shop or repurpose them for leftovers or as a lunch bag.
  4. Kill a Watt Not: Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Do not leave your TV/AC/Heat on if no one is in the room. Wear a sweater. Hang your clothes out to dry. LED bulbs. Buy them. Use them. That’s all we have to say on the matter.
  5. Save water. Fewer baths, shorter showers, turning off the tap when you brush your teeth, wash clothes in cold water, use (recycled) paper dishes and plastic cutlery, etc.
  6. Carpool: there are online sites across the country to help commuters get to and from work via jitney services. If you work for a large company, get to know others who live near you and save gas, wear and tear on your car, and make time spent in traffic more enjoyable. Reduced emissions are the gains here.
  7. Eat less meat and dairy. Some farmers are not going to like this, but there is a movement to reduce or eliminate red meat and dairy from our diets. Arguments include the greenhouse emissions associated with raising livestock over plant crops, and the effect the animal byproducts have on our health. Don’t. Kill. The. Messenger.
  8. One of the ways we can preserve our waterways and the aquifer is by responsible recreational boating practices. In fact, many lakeside communities mandate the sole use of electric boat motors for all water-going craft. Not only does this practice reduce noise pollution, but it also maintains an excellent habitat for most marine life including plant life that oxygenates our waterways. Another plus: fishermen know that a quiet-running trolling motor is ideal for sneaking up on a schools of trout, bass, and other tasty aquatic life!
  9. Go to the car wash. You may think by washing your car at home that you are saving money. Not only are you being wasteful with water usage, but also car wash facilities have responsible recycling procedures in place. Also homeowners may be poisoning their own landscaping with run off from cleaning products and polishes formulated to clean and maintain your car’s finish, not your lawn.
  10. Download software. Buying software online reduces packaging waste and has one very positive benefit: those seamless automatic updates!

We should have all learned from impactful events such as Chernobyl (a once, pastoral location in Russia now forever associated with a nuclear plant accident and subsequent resident health ailments) that preserving our environment is of paramount importance to ours and future generations. As stated previously, we do not have to join marches or petition our legislators to be involved in environmental preservation. Just integrate some of the practices listed into your daily life and you’ll be making an immediate contribution to keeping our planet green.
