When contemplating just how impactful COVID-19 has been on the world, it’s tough to put it into words. The way we think, act, communicate – the way we do business has been turned on its head. However, what initially appeared to be nothing short of a tombstone for businesses ended up morphing into a golden opportunity. Now more than ever, businesses are finding creative, innovative ways to work around face-to-face obstacles to get things done and secure their revenue streams. With that said, here are 5 ways businesses have and are continuing to adapt to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Virtual Communication

While it may not be urgent at this time, increased technology use and virtual conferencing has become “the new normal” allowing businesses, coworkers and recruiters to collaborate from anywhere. As you’d expect, popular communication software companies have taken advantage of this climate, adding special features to accommodate people and businesses.

Outsourcing More

More distance means more opportunities for productivity. As a result, businesses have been capitalizing on their ability to outsource IT services, marketing, accounting and everything in between. Not only has this allowed businesses to safely social distance, but it has also enabled them to cut costs in many areas. Not to mention how many opportunities this has created for businesses that depend on being outsourced.

Virtual Services

There was a time (early 2020) where face-to-face or in-person was seen as imperative for many jobs. This number has since drastically decreased thanks to COVID-19. Employers and business owners saw in-person positions as advantageous for certain reasons, not giving remote options a second thought until they were out of options. In many cases, it turns out that not only are these positions possible but in some cases more productive with autonomy. Many positions in business, accounting, legal services and many more have made the transition with little sign of going back.

Rethinking Customer Service

This may come as a surprise to some, but customer service practices saw a shift following the COVID-19 pandemic. So many customer service procedures have shifted from in-person social media and chatbots. This has drastically helped businesses cut costs and save time.
Automating these processes has also created new jobs in the space, from coding to strategy and policy all in the name of safety and efficiency.

Diversifying Their Products and Services

As certain tasks and services found themselves in less demand, many businesses felt the need to diversify their services to compensate. As an example, the restaurant space now needs less wait staff and indoor space and more delivery services to accommodate social distancing regulations. To compensate for lack of certain demands, businesses looked to bolster and/or replace less desirable services for others. That way they could make up lost revenue while possibly capitalizing on newfound opportunities.

Important Takeaways

Any sticky situation, in any climate calls for change. The challenge is whether businesses are ready to make such changes, especially when they are as drastic as what was required during COVID-19. All in all, it looks like entrepreneurs and businesses alike now see the importance of being creative and dynamic because, in a blink of an eye, the world can be put on its head. So whether it’s a matter of regulating communications, outsourcing work, or diversifying your services, the ability to adjust is what will enable businesses to survive anything – and that’s what’s important.

Everybody is familiar with this image – an under-construction building with several people working on it, wearing hard hats and navigating around some tall, wooden or steel structures. These structures are referred to as ‘scaffolding,’ which is one of the most important aspects of any architectural job. But why is it considered such a vital part of the construction industry?

Scaffoldings are always the first thing installed when starting any construction project or maintenance work. While it is only a temporary support system for the workers to conduct their work, scaffolding is important for construction in more than one way. Here are seven reasons why the use of scaffolding is considered of paramount importance when it comes to working in the construction industry:

Easy Accessibility

Working on a construction site becomes way more challenging when the building has some areas that have limited or no access. That is one of the major problems that scaffoldings address by providing workers a clear passageway to all parts of the structure. This is especially important when the under-construction site is a tall building where a supporting platform is more than essential.

Scaffoldings provide a secure channel to the construction workers, providing an entrance to any area in the building without having to worry about the disarrayed structure. Moreover, the scaffolding’s interconnected layout ensures the builders can have full access to each part of the area for easily performing their tasks like painting or plastering.

Firm Footing and Balance

After the accessibility factor, the biggest advantage of installing scaffoldings would be the exceptional balance that they provide to the builders who are actively working on the site. There are several tasks to be performed where the construction workers must be at their quick pace while working on the building. That’s only possible when they have a firm footing and a stable balance. Using a high quality scaffolding never fails to deliver in this aspect.
Thanks to the solid, flat surface that the scaffolds offer, the builders can comfortably balance themselves in different positions. It is a necessary facet of the job as it helps them posture themselves in the required strategic positions and specific angles needed to carry out their work efficiently.

Maximum Safety

Safety is among the primary reasons why scaffolding is important for construction. Working at dizzying heights always carries an element of risk and danger for the builders. This means that it is necessary to provide them with a safe and secure construction setting to perform their tasks without worrying about falling. Not only does it ensure the health and safety of the builders, but it also protects the people below the scaffolding. Moreover, this structure provides the workers with a secure medium to transport their materials without getting injured. And to top it off, scaffoldings also work as an excellent barrier to catch all the loose debris, creating a safe working environment for everyone involved.

High Productivity

While this is not as prominent a reason to install scaffolding into a construction site, enhanced productivity is an advantage that is way more useful than many other factors. These structures indirectly give you a greater benefit of efficiency, significantly speeding up your overall job. When a construction builder is offered a safe working space with easy access to different parts of the building and a solid foot balance, the productivity automatically elevates tenfold. As it is a highly demanding job that requires excruciating physical efforts and time, scaffoldings provide the kind of advantage that proves to be exceptionally helpful for the workers until their work is fully finished.

The Bridging Act

An unfinished building involves several activities where the construction workers might need to take a considerable time out of their schedule, making their way to a certain point safely. This could be an unnecessary waste of energy and time for the builders.
Scaffolding makes it easier for the workers on-site, saving their extra time and energy by offering several bridging points, reducing the long distances that need to be covered. Along with these benefits, it’s also worth mentioning that the bridging points also prove to be helpful for making the construction process simpler.

Easy Assembly and Dismantling Process

Despite what many people assume, it doesn’t take a lot of time to assemble or dismantle the scaffolding structure. The simple process saves the builders a significant amount of time constantly working through a tight deadline and doing their best to complete the projects within the required time limit. Simply put, the construction builders minimize their pre-construction and post-construction time when they decide to install scaffoldings onto their working site.

The Scaffolding’s Lifespan

By now, you must have realized why scaffolding is important for the construction industry and why not using them isn’t taken lightly in the industry. However, there is another bonus advantage to these structures – increased safety at construction sites. Typically, good-quality scaffolds last a very long time, whether they’re made of wood or steel. This makes the scaffoldings a highly durable accessory for finishing the job more competently and securely every single time.

During the ongoing pandemic, hospitals and ERs have turned into hotspots for the spread of coronavirus. In many regions, the situation has left physicians and patients with no option but to resort to remote interaction. In other words, they have to ultimately leverage telehealth services.

In the last couple of months, telehealth’s successful provision of healthcare services has silenced the skeptics of this unorthodox method of attending patients. However, I would like to mention here that telehealth’s acceptance and prevalence had started even before the pandemic began.

Various statistics and surveys indicate that the telehealth sector was booming pre-COVID-19 as well. For instance, the worldwide telehealth market size was around $45 billion last year, and it is projected to expand to $175 billion by 2026. Hopefully, we will have a COVID-19 vaccine by next year. So, the rise shown in this six-year projection makes it clear that telehealth’s recent growth has not been propelled by the current pandemic. I myself have used these services to save time and limit time missed from work and other activities.

Besides numbers, patient behavior which was once a great obstacle is also changing for the better. Patients are becoming more open to using healthcare services without visiting the facilities in person. A Massachusetts General Hospital survey indicates that almost 80% of patients believe that arranging a telehealth follow-up visit is far more convenient than arranging an in-person visit.

Why Is Telehealth On the Rise?

Apart from the development and availability of technology required for telehealth, this virtual section of the healthcare landscape is booming for various reasons. Since physicians, care providers and patients are the most prominent stakeholders in the future of telehealth, I will try to dissect the popularity of telehealth from their perspective.

Why Are More Providers Embracing Telehealth?

Physicians and providers have been investing in telehealth infrastructure for a couple of years now. A report from 2017 suggests that almost 70% of healthcare providers were using telehealth tools. Now, more providers have started to embrace telehealth, and the ones that already have it are expanding their existing infrastructure.

Delivering Better Experience to Patients

Harvard University has conducted pretty interesting research to discover the money-equivalent of the time you spend waiting for the doctor. The researchers have calculated that it costs a patient $43 for the time they spend visiting the clinic and waiting for the doctor. Out of 121 minutes of an itinerary of a doctor’s visit, a patient spends only 20 minutes with the doctor. By using telehealth, physicians and providers can save patients those precious 80 minutes wasted in commutes and waiting rooms.

Expanding Access to Healthcare without Expanding Physical Infrastructure

Hospitals and clinics are always experiencing a shortage of experts and specialists. They also don’t have the means to expand the premises or increase the sizes of waiting rooms for accommodating the ever-increasing number of patients and people accompanying them. Telehealth has enabled them to deliver healthcare services to more patients from the same premises and with the same human resources.

Physicians and providers operating out of urban centers can now establish a branch for rural and suburban areas without building a full-fledged facility there providing care that may have been inaccessible before.

Offering Better Revenue Model

A healthcare facility has to pay bills and staff salaries while constantly upgrading itself with modern technology and equipment. In this financially strained context, the telehealth division offers a better revenue model to them. They can improve their bottom lines with very little investment.

Streamlining Workflow

In a traditional clinical setting, things remain chaotic all the time. This chaos can be dealt with by telehealth systems. When patients are attended through a telehealth system, staff members (physicians, specialists, nurses, and attendants) can deliver their skills and services to the right set of conditions and circumstances.

Why Patients Are Leaning Toward Telehealth Services

A survey has found out that 74% of respondents would use telehealth services. The growing Generation Z, millennial, and Generation X population has been fully accustomed to technology, and they don’t mind moving from traditional care provision setup to a virtual one. Apart from these factors, patients are becoming more accepting of telehealth facilities for these reasons.

No Commutes No Waiting

Many of us don’t want to visit physicians for minor illnesses. This reluctance is primarily rooted in the fact that one has to travel and then wait for their turn to see the doctor. Telehealth has removed both these unwanted elements from doctor-patient interaction.

Easy Access to Specialists

Healthcare specialists are a rare commodity. Their appointments are hard to get, and you often need to travel long distances to visit them in person. Telehealth services have made specialists more accessible to patients. Patients can get expert advice from a specialist without taking off from work and without emptying their fuel tanks.

Better Follow-up Regimen

For a patient suffering from a recurring or chronic illness, telehealth has become a godsend. Instead of undergoing the inconvenience and hassle of visiting the clinic regularly, they can keep in touch with their physicians through a video link.

Is There Any Flipside?

Every new technology with all its benefits also involves some tradeoff. So, before I sign off, I would like to have a quick view of the “other side” of telehealth. The first and foremost drawback of telehealth services is certainly the loss of human touch. To be honest, having an in-person checkup has a therapeutic value that only patients can understand.

The other downside, or rather fear, is that care providers will develop a neglectful attitude with the prevalence of telehealth. Instead of trying to investigate the symptoms properly, they will count on antibiotics to cure the disease. Some people also think that the rise of telehealth will further exacerbate privacy issues as it involves transmitting confidential patient data via the Internet.

Despite all these drawbacks and concerns, telehealth’s scope will continue to expand because its benefits for everyone outweigh the issues it poses. Also, many such concerns are arising out of presumptions and overcautious thinking, and they will be ironed out with time.

The post Telehealth on the Up and Up – The Unprecedented Rise of Virtual Healthcare Facilities appeared first on Newton Search.

I’m sure you’ve heard a lot about yoga and some of its benefits. While it might sound sort of a “trendy” thing, we can confirm that its practices are great for you on a foundational level. So for the sake of our sanity and your benefit, we’ll break down the core benefits of practicing yoga.

Weight Control

Are you looking to lose weight or just maintain your figure? We know a sound diet is the most important thing to achieve solid weight control, but exercise is also a great way to burn calories and allow for a more forgiving diet. You burn calories when practicing yoga, therefore decreasing your average daily caloric intake when practicing yoga regularly.

Hate going to the gym? Yoga is a great alternative!

You’ll Be More Flexible

Being flexible was never a bad thing, but people tend to overlook some of its core benefits. For starters, more flexibility guarantees a wider range of motion, which increases the effectiveness of all other exercising efforts moving forward. This includes strength training, sports, cardio and anything else you can think of. Let’s also not forget how important flexibility is with age. A lot of the stiffness and tightness older folks face could have been prevented by practicing yoga in their youth.

It Boosts Muscle Strength

Having to hold certain positions increases your strength in ways that you can’t really replicate with gym equipment. Muscle strength isn’t just convenient when helping your friend move, it’s actually very important as you age. Who’s really opposed to more strength anyway?

It’s Ideal For Toning Your Muscles

In addition to weight control and strength gain, you’ll see noticeable changes with the actual toning of your muscles after practicing yoga for a period of time. Perfect for getting ready for beach season in the springtime.

You’ll Be Preventing Injuries

More flexibility and a repeatedly increased range of motion tends to mean one thing – fewer injuries. Most pulled muscles are caused when the muscle fibers twitch and are overstretched. Regularly stretching and practicing yoga prepares the muscles for these actions, making them more capable of performing said actions. This is why people stretch before working out or playing sports.

Great For Cardiovascular Health

When people think of cardiovascular exercise, they think of a treadmill or a jog. These are examples of cardiovascular exercise, but not the only examples. To be honest, any extended use of muscles (the heart is a muscle, too!) is an example of cardiovascular exercise. When exhausting energy, you have to breathe harder, which makes it work more efficiently.

Excellent For Stress Management

While not the same thing, yoga is basically synonymous with meditation. They go hand-and-hand. Yoga is about learning mind and muscle control, as well as finding a connection between the two. The idea is to synchronize these elements of your body to achieve heightened states of zen. Maybe not “zen”, but your own version of it.

It’s Considered a Top Breathing Exercise

We all breathe every day (obviously), but there’s more to it than survival. Achieving a better breathing rate will reduce stress and anxiety and benefit many major organs in the process. Simply put, more effective breathing means more successful – everything!

Prepare To Have More Energy

Getting a solid amount of healthy exercise will help your body manage its energy reserve and build upon it over time. Stronger muscles, more flexibility and a better sleep routine are all byproducts of yoga and all will contribute to a more energized you.

A More Peaceful Mind

I’m sure you’re very busy and there are probably a million things going on in your head right now. That’s normal and while not ideal, is manageable with regular yoga practice. Investing just 10-20 minutes a day will give you the outlet to relax and focus on you. This will help you clear your mind and make space for a better tomorrow.

Just as there are exclusive fitness centers featuring soft tones, flattering lighting, soothing music, personal masseuse, trainers, and top-flight equipment, there are crowded, noisy, garishly-lit, gyms with wait lines, communal dressing rooms and cold showers for the rest of us. Well, home fitness centers have been bridging that disparity for a few years now. They offer the ambiance of a spa, with the exclusivity of knowing that the equipment is custom-calibrated for your use alone- that is if you can afford the steep price tag! In this article, we’ll cover a range of options for those seeking the solace that only a workout within your own four walls can provide.

Whether maintenance, muscle-building, or weight control is your goal, home gyms offer the best options for continued success. Working out at home means you can set your own schedule, and no more waiting for a piece of equipment to become available while trying to maintain your exercise-elevated cardio level. Your ‘locker room’ and shower facilities are more exclusive as well. Also, no combination locks or lockers to stow your gear while you exercise, and no monthly/annual membership fee. There’s more- no self-consciousness around folks who were born fit and genetically hard-wired to stay that way regardless of how many pizzas and beers they ingest. That said, here are our top picks and why:

Peleton: The current darling of successful Millennials and Gen-Xers, the Peleton is a stationary bike that takes its riders on trips around the world. It is a quality-built machine, with excellent, inspirational and motivational trainers and customer service to match. Many users have stated that previously they were not conducive to working out but quickly became ‘hooked’. That is due to the interactivity between users and trainers as well as other riders. Users can be in their homes, but also a continent away riding alongside other participants. The machine monitors heart rate and other metrics, as well as offers arm toning options.

Cost: $3,000+ for the first year (machine and an annual subscription for classes), roughly $500 yearly for classes thereafter. Extended warranty will incur an additional charge. If this machine is too pricey and cult-ish for your taste and wallet, Nordic Trak, Fly Anywhere, Cyclebar, and SoulCycle have similar options. Additional cons: While sleek and attractive, without the subscription service, this 135-lb machine is just an indoor bike.

Total Gym XLS Home Gym: The popular choice among Boomers due to its celebrity endorsements (Chuck Norris and Christy Brinkley) and the fact that if you use it, it works. Clearly aimed towards seniors, the gym is great for those seeking to increase flexibility and tone and lengthen muscles. The product is regularly flacked on that TV channel that offers interest-free payment plans- also a plus with those on fixed-budgets. This model is also rock-solid and will support individuals up to 400 lbs. While many competitors offer a stripped-down base model, just about everyone one could wish for comes standard including an ab attachment, attachments for arms and legs, dip and pull-up bars, squat stand, and stability mat. The DVD claims over 80 exercise options so boredom is not likely to set in. The only cons are that to use it, one must be flexible enough to lower oneself down to the slider base. A spotter is recommended. Also, while the machine folds for closet or under bed storage, fully extended, it takes up over 90” of space. Not suitable for a cramped apartment. Shipped folded flat, DIYers can set it up themselves or hire a handyman. Cost: Roughly $1,000. Also seen on eBay for from $150.- $299.

Tonal – Due to space limitations, many have been deterred about setting up a home gym. Others do not like the look of most fitness equipment relative to the ambiance of their open-concept living. Tonal provides the ideal fusion between home decor and getting a solid fitness workout. Wall-mounted, with its sleek and alluring design, this machine is also a monument to consumer technology. This home fitness center of the future is here and now. Problem is, it is cost-prohibitive for most of us. The total outlay for this wall-mounted wonder is about $5K when taxes, delivery, installation, and the monthly subscription fees are applied.

What does this paragon do, exactly? Tonal’s pros include a range of workout options for almost every fitness level; it uses up to 200-lbs of magnetic force resistance (like some rowing machines) yet, it is compact and when not in use, unobtrusive. More pros- Tonal is easy to use, and dynamic. This means there are multiple workout features so it is not a one-trick pony it’s users will soon tire of. Continuous updates are promised, so additional classes will be available on a regular basis. Cons, other than the price, are said to be that for competitive weightlifters, 200-lbs of resistance is child’s play. That’s not most of us. Also, the parent company is a startup, so some owners are concerned that down the road, their warranty might be invalid. As for competitors, right now there are no other wall-mounted exercise machines offering the same features.

We said every budget, right? Some readers may still be thinking this equipment is out of reach. Remember, every system offers payment plans but if you truly are a cheapskate, there are still other options. Many townships have an ‘offer up’ website where residents can upload photos of unwanted household goods, free on a first-come, first-served, haul-it-away-yourself basis. Unwieldy, disused exercise equipment is a perennial selection on these sites. If less is more for you, however, just opt for hand-held free weights in varying sizes, a portable over-the-door system consisting of a pull-up bar, pulleys, and handles. Add a star if the door features a full-length mirror. If not, many towns have an ‘offer up’ website.

Along with coffee, tea is a leading beverage for people all around the world. Let’s start with the difference between teas because many just think “tea is tea” and that couldn’t be farther from the truth. In truth, tea is broken down into 7 main categories, then each category is broken further into a subcategory. We’ll break them down below!

Black Tea

Black tea is seen as the standard in America and is often served with a higher concentration of caffeine.

English Breakfast: Often a mix between Indian and Indonesian black tea leaves, English Breakfasts classic taste dates back to the 19th century. Many start with English Breakfast as one of their first black teas.

English Afternoon: You can think of English Afternoon as “English Breakfast Lite”. By that, we mean it has a lighter, more refreshing feels with the same general taste and feel as it’s parent brew. Many like to have this, oddly in the afternoon as a “pick me up” after having something a little darker in the morning.

Breakfast Assam: A nice, smooth and malty tea is an excellent choice for a cold day. We like to think of it as a rich chai tea, making it almost like a hybrid between the two worlds.

Ceylon Burning Sun: This critically acclaimed breakfast blend is known for having depth to its flavor. It can be hard to find at times, but many agree that it’s worth the journey. The taste has aged aroma mixed with hints of fruit that make for an excellent morning brew.

Earl Grey: You can’t go wrong with some Earl Grey. The powerful flavor with moderate levels of caffeine makes for what we consider a standard (along with English Breakfast). Because of its popularity, we find that Earl Grey tends to vary a little more in flavor and style than other teas, which makes trying new blends even more fun.

Lady Grey: Think of Earl Grey with a slight hint of citrus. No, not one of those orange teas, but just a faint twist that makes it a great choice for mixing up your morning routine.

Irish Breakfast: This (ironically) Indian blend is known for its high concentration of caffeine, which is especially helpful for those groggy mornings. Irish Breakfast is among our favorites and is one that we often prefer to drink straight. It’s like the espresso of tea.

Empire Keemun: Empire Keemun is allegedly the tea that started the opium wars in 19th-century China. The rich, powerful flavor is a favorite by many.

Black Pearl: The smooth (but powerful) Black Pearl is extremely popular among avid tea drinkers. It’s seen as the perfect balance between bold and sweet with a hint of molasses and fruit.

Roasted Chestnut: This dark, nutty blend just screams “holiday season” to us. It’s a really nice feel during the cold weather with a featured flavor of silky, nutty sweetness that we just find irresistible.

Dark Tea

Served mostly in Asia, Dark tea has a sweet aroma with an herbal feel. The selection is fairly limited, considering.

Dark Rose: Dark Rose offers a full, but smooth taste with an almost dusty rose aroma that gives the blend its name and overall identity. It’s very popular in China and is known for being rich in antioxidants.

Anhua Dark: This modern tea has similar features to Dark Rose but takes its own course. Anhua features a sweeter, almost lighter feel to other dark teas with an aroma that changes a little as it ages.

Hunan Silk: The smooth as silk tea has a fruity kick and is used for iced tea almost as often as it is for hot. Its floral aromas make it pleasant, especially for spring mornings.

Oolong Tea

Oolong is like a hybrid between black and green tea. They give mosaic vibes with fruity aromas that are great for any time of the day.

Blue Beauty: Blue Beauty is another tea that is not popular in the west and is predominantly served in China. The sweet, yet floral blend is an Oolong favorite.

Brandy Oolong:

Brandy has many meanings and in this case, it means a strong tea with a smooth fruity taste.

Golden Dawn:

A black tea with some green that has quite a unique taste. The sweet taste and silky feel turn into a delicious morning brew.

High Mountain: What’s mild, smooth and has a creamy feel? High Mountain! This is made in Taiwan and is hard to find, so if you do – give it a shot!

Milk Oolong: Milk Oolong is like a tea’s coffee, but with a soft, creamy taste. This is probably the best Oolong for a cold winter morning.

Green Tea

Green tea is mild in taste and low in caffeine but makes up for it with their antioxidants.

Apple Chai: A sweet apple tea with a touch of spice that is perfect in the summer.

Bamboo Leaf: Bamboo Leaf is a good lunch tea that is made from vegetables. It has a mild taste. So it goes well with just about anything (best with sandwiches, though).

Sencha: Its flavor resembles sweet grass and it’s pretty hydrating.

White Tea

White tea is similar to green but has more of a natural sweetness to it. It’s hard to find, so when you do, give it a shot.

Happy White Plum: The White Plum is high in minerals and almost seems like mineral water.

Silver Needles: This Asian blend is ideal for the spring. It also has a sweet and silky feel, which is great for lunch!

White Mango Ginger: The White Mango Ginger is like a tropical tea with a touch of spice. It’s good hot and cold, making it the ultimate tea for any season!

<a class="a2a_dd addtoany_share_save addtoany_share" href="https://www.addtoany.com/share#url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newtonsearch.net%2Flike-tea-these-blends-are-ideal-for-all-tea-drinkers%2F&title=Like%20Tea%3F%20These%20Blends%20Are%20Ideal%20For%20All%20Tea%20Drinkers" data-a2a-url="https://www.newtonsearch.net/like-tea-these-blends-are-ideal-for-all-tea-drinkers/" data-a2a-title="Like Tea?

Many on the path to personal fitness will shop around for a personal trainer at an impressive-looking gym. Most will spend more time buying fitness wear than paying attention to a critical factor in their regimens overall success, their diet. For maximum impact and optimal results, every exercise routine or weight training program needs to be supported by a diet plan. Eating to support your workout goals is a critical factor in its efficacy. Here’s how to go about it.

The first caveat is to know your daily caloric intake allotment. This will be different for those seeking to increase muscle mass and those trying to shed extra pounds. Either way, the number that matters is the Calorie Maintenance Level. This number will be the jumping off point. Determine your range by multiplying your current weight first by 14, and then by 18. Your ideal daily caloric maintenance level falls between those two numbers.

For those with a higher metabolic rate, pick a number within the high end of the range. Losing weight? Go with a lower number. On to determining your goal. Weight loss candidates know they have to reduce their caloric intake, period. So if you recommended maintenance level is 2,000 calories a day, drop to 1,500 to ensure you’ll lose fat. For muscle builders, consuming more calories is the goal to create a surplus of calories from which your body will craft muscle. For men, add 250 calories a day to your maintenance level, and women, try 125 additional calories.

Combine Diet and Exercise for Success

Please note, these numbers are not cast in stone. Your scale will tell you if your calories need adjusting. Losing more than 2 lbs a week? That’s too much and you’ll lose fast, but regain the weight just as fast, so slow things down! For building muscle mass, men should see up to a 2-lb weight increase, and women, up to a pound. Next, and you knew we were getting around to it, what you eat is a important as how much you can eat.

Protein is key to attaining fitness. Healthy adults should eat 2 grams of protein per pound of weight per day. If you weigh 200-lbs, then 200 grams of quality protein from chicken, fish, turkey, lean red meat, eggs, milk, protein supplements, nuts and legumes will provide the best options for you. As for fat, reduce it, but make sure it accounts for 25% of your daily intake, even if your fitness goals are to lose weight. Your skin will thank you for it! Aim to ingest only healthy fats such as fish, musts, seeds, and olive oil. In every fitness diet, carbs may seem to get the short end of the stick. Whatever calories are left may be consumed as carbs. But not just any carbs! Avoid white processed carbohydrates. These will scuttle building lean muscle and losing stubborn fat. Instead, opt for fresh fruits and veggies, rice, potatoes of all kinds, and grains.

You might be wondering, how to put this all together? There are countless diets online that will tell you what to buy, along with weekly meal plans and recipes. As long as these diet plans follow the correct ratios for the amount of protein, fats, and carbs you’re allotted there should be no issues. Actually once it is up and running for a couple weeks, your diet will be easier to follow than your workout routine!

Work Your Diet Plan/Workout Into Your Schedule

On that note, your diet plan, like your fitness regimen must work into your schedule, not the other way around, or you’ll quickly abandon it. So, eat whenever you want. That’s right! You can also eat as often as you want to, eating whole meals, little snacks, or a combination of the two. However you want to play it. You can also eat whatever combination of foods best suits your needs. All carbs, all protein, a mix-up, whatever. Just do not eclipse your allotted caloric intake for the day. Also, forget about not eating after 8:00 PM. We all have different schedules and our bodies are attuned to work and digesting food around the clock, even while we are sleeping. That is a fact.

Many have asked if it is okay to take vitamin supplements as an adjunct to their fitness program. Absolutely! Not only is it a quick way to achieve nutritional balance and to replace nutrients lost during your workout, taking a supplement is a great way to take better care of yourself. In fact, there are vitamins especially formulated for improved energy, stamina, and cellular protection. These support skin health as well as ensure our teeth, hair, and vital organs will function optimally.

You’ll soon see that by augmenting your fitness regimen with a healthy diet, your surplus pounds will steadily vanish, replaced by a strong, lean, sculpted physique. Reps alone cannot accomplish this. Regaining and maintaining good health through fitness is one of the best things anyone can do for themselves. Another caveat is that occasional cheating is acceptable as long as it is offset by extended workout to burn calories. Also the expectation that results over the next few days will not be on target. Just start slow, forgive yourself the occasional hiccup, and shortly you’ll be hooked on a fitness regimen coupled with a sensible diet for life!

In fine dining, food trends come and food trends go. Most get their start on restaurant menus. Who can forget quiche, or carrot cake, two stalwart menu staples of the 1970s, the nouvelle cuisine fad of the 1980s along with blackened anything, spinach dip, or raspberry vinaigrette? Remember also, that sushi appeared during this decade and soon gained lasting traction in every town and village. Let us not forget the tapas bars that sprang up coast to coast during the 1990s, along with chicken caesar salad, cranberries in salads, pecans and…wait for it, ubiquitous goat cheese.

What all these menu items have in common is that they made their way off restaurant menus and into mainstream American homes, where many continue to be enjoyed by all age groups and demographics. Another common thread is that most of these foods incorporate fresh ingredients. Renewed interest in consuming locally-sourced produce and meats eventually spawned the current farm-to-table-movement (FTTM) in the United States. In this article we’ll explore the top reasons that make this movement one that should become entrenched and influence how Americans eat for decades to come.

Like many a food trend, there are many who claim to have been instrumental in the growth of this now world-wide trend. Some claim that the FTTM began in Italy back in 1986 as the Slow Food Organization. Others point to the Post WWII era when returning soldiers left farming for the cities and newly created subdivisions, only to experience fewer fresh food choices and a rise in packaged goods such as canned vegetables and frozen TV dinners. Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, published in 1962 is generally heralded as a major influence on farmers, restaurateurs, and consumers alike. In the 1990s consumers began seeking food that was sourced locally and farmers markets, long out-of-vogue, re-emerged throughout the country. Today the FTTM’s influence is widespread and to date has influenced school-lunch programs, food labelling, and even a vegetable-forward subset.

Good for the Environment: Many Americans might not be aware, but trucks provide the primary transport for fresh food. Consider the amount of noxious fumes released into the air during cross country transport by thousands upon thousands of trucks. With the FTTM, smaller vehicles bring fresh foods to market across much shorter distances.

Good for Employment: Everyone along the chain benefits from an increased need for staffers. More interest in the movement increases the number of growers, farmers, distributors, and of course, restaurants all of which sustain their employees and their employees’ families.

Good for Health and Wellbeing: farm to table food is fresher, healthier food. Local produce, for example offers more health benefits than supermarket veggies which have been picked prior to ripeness to compensate for shipping time. Not only are these foods not fully ripe and therefore minus many vitamins and nutrients, these foods are often sprayed with chemicals to survive transit. Another plus is that fresh, ripe produce tastes better and can make even picky eaters devour their vegetables. Today there is a resurgence in healthy eating that excludes processed and genetically-modified foodstuffs. Plant-centric eating is eating healthy!

Good for the Local Economy: Long haul trucking that delivers Florida and California fruits and vegetables across the nation takes profitability away from the local vendors in those states. Not only does FTTM provide jobs for local people, but also since the monies are being bought and sold within a short distance, the proceeds benefit the local economy. It also ensures cheaper prices which means more wholesome and nutritious food choices even for those on a low or fixed incomes which improves their overall health and wellbeing.

Good for Sustainability: Fewer toxic emissions are not the only way in which the FTTM is sustainable. We must respect the earth our food is grown in and restore it by rotating crops, and increasing the use of hydroponic farming. To some, the concept of Farm to Table is backwards. To be fully sustainable, these experts claim, the table must support the farm. In other words, the menus must support agriculture.

That means instead of demanding crops out of their normal season, for example, which some farmers extend through the use of chemicals and sprays, accepting that the best quality items offer a window of opportunity. Also that alternates must be found and accepted by restaurant goers and those who gather around the family table. Must there be a 25-lb, chemically-induced turkey at your Thanksgiving table? What about preparing two smaller organic birds instead using the same oven space. This way consumers will not only save preparation time but also consume less energy. Now if we only had a cure for overeating on that day!

We hope we’ve shed some light on the value of the Farm to Table Movement and why it must not be regarded as a passing fad or food trend. Instead, it’s value to several sectors of our society is key to our continued vitality as a nation. If you think about it that’s not a lot to ask of the foods that fuel us, it is actually a concept we can easily all get around to our mutual benefit!

Goji berry, acai, pomegranate, kale. What do these foods have in common? They’re superfoods. Say what?! Let’s explain. For nearly 40 years there has been an ever-growing trend towards consuming foods that are actually good for you, and the earth. In recent decades, however, the ground swell toward "eating healthy" has eclipsed ‘healthy eating" with the rise of "superfoods". These foods are morsels allegedly so packed with nutrients that they make bottled multi-vitamins pale by comparison. This hallowed roster varies by source but generally includes greek yogurt (probiotics), quinoa (contains nine essential amino acids our bodies cannot produce), blueberries (fights cancer and improves memory), chia seed (loaded with essential fatty acids), green tea (EGCG, a phytochemical, slows irregular cell growth), broccoli (contains high levels of vitamin C), and kale (high in calcium, iron, and fiber).

The trend for ingesting foods that not only taste good, but can improve your health has become big business, very big business. It has inspired backyard gardening, restaurants that source their produce from local growers, or grow these plants themselves, and cottage industries. In fact, after kale the next superfood may in fact be more superfoods. Chain restaurants such as Panera, and markets such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have come "clean" and only feature foods that are non-GMO, organic, and wholesomely prepared for maximum taste and nutritional value. It is a growing trend among millennials and health conscious older persons…groceries, restaurants, growers, and processors have taken notice and are working to accommodate this literally, growing trend.
Determining What is a Superfood

What makes a superfood a superfood, exactly? Its Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) rating. According to the Scientific American, the rating is the result of a lab test to indicate a food’s antioxidant content value. An ORAC-rating of over 5000 generally heralds its status as a superfood. So, ready or not, here are the top superfoods for 2018!

Nut oils. Fast on the heels of 2017’s nut butter craze, pressed nut oils are being championed as flavorful, and have a lower trans fat intake. They are multi-purpose and may be used in cooking, baking, and as an ingredient in salad dressings. Every heard of Cassava Flour? Chances are that going forward, you will. Used as a wheat alternative, it is made from the root of the eponymous vegetable and is commonly available in Bali and Southern Asia. In addition to being vegan, it is paleo-friendly, and gluten-free. Most persons already familiar with superfoods, know about the anti-inflammatory value of turmeric, especially its dementia-combative properties. Maca, cacao and matcha powders are also high in antioxidants are said to increase metabolism and speed weight loss, also.

Fans of Goji or Acai berries, known to regulate blood sugar and prevent insulin spikes, may find milder-flavored Maqui berries more to their liking. Said to be tasty yet low in sugar, these berries are packed with vitamins and antioxidants, too. No one tires of eating pistachios, but they are among the more expensive nuts at the grocery. This year, why not sample nuts from the Tiger tree? Roasted, they resemble raisins but are full of fiber, protein, potassium, as well as prebiotics and are easy to digest. Brimming with magnesium, these nuts help you to unwind after a workout, are good for maintaining healthy blood pressure and building strong bones.

If mushrooms are the food item you pick off your pizza slice and discard, then rethink that option. Perhaps the least expensive, and easiest to find, any form of this fungi will do. Each stem and cap is loaded with Vitamin D and a host of B-vitamins. Some food manufacturers are even sneaking mushrooms into beverages such as coffee and tea.

The spoiler here is that perhaps the greatest superfood to come already has an enormous following- bacon. Bacon?! How can that be? Is this the same food item that was condemned in 2015 by the World Health Organization (WHO) as carcinogenic? The very same. But today’s bacon is not like the processed meat that WHO decried. Those chemicals and salts used as preservatives in processed fatty meats are the cancer-culprits. Healthy bacon selections are both lean and nitrite-free. The bonus here is that bacon is a source of protein and amino-acids, both are great for building muscle and increasing stamina.

For anyone interested in achieving and maintaining their good health, superfoods supply the vitamins and minerals that our bodies require, yet do not necessarily produce on their own. As with many food fads, some superfoods are priced out of the reach of many of us. However, using common sense while keeping an eye on on’s food budget, a trip to the grocery offers many superfood options, like kale, blueberries, and broccoli. Forming sensible eating habits through a diet that includes as many superfoods as possible, what at first seemed to some as a passing fad, has become a way of life worth adopting.
